I would like to introduce The Talented Amelia Lowe. :)
Candie & Michelle: What inspired you to start dancing? How many years have you been dancing?
Amelia Lowe: I was first inspired to dance by my mother. She had been a dancer living in New York before I was born and she started taking lessons again when I was five years old. She took me to the studio with her and thought it would be a good idea for me to start. I've been dancing for sixteen years now.
Candie & Michelle: I'm so glad you got into dancing. You are truly talented. How does living in New York differ from living in New Jersey?
Amelia Lowe: Living in New York is great because of the culture that you can find everywhere you look. I love living within walking distance of amazing museums and historical monuments. New Jersey doesn't offer nearly as much in that regard. New Jersey will always feel like home to me though because all of my family still lives there. I feel nostalgic every time I go back.
Candie & Michelle: I would love to see both New York & New Jersey in the future. Did you go to school for dance or were you self taught?
Amelia Lowe: I trained in a variety of schools growing up for dance. I also went to a vocational high school to study dance along with drama.
Candie & Michelle: What is the first song you remember dancing to?
Amelia Lowe: The first song that I can remember choreographing to is "Respect" by Pink. Even at five years old I was very into girl power and choreography.
Candie & Michelle: :) What is your most memorable performance you have ever done?
Amelia Lowe: The most memorable performance I've ever done was the final show of the So You Think You Can Dance tour. It had been such a long journey from when I had first auditioned to that final performance. It was unbelievable to have that chapter of my life come to a close.
Candie & Michelle: Who is your biggest supporter?
Amelia Lowe: I can't narrow down my biggest supporter because I have such a solid group of people who are always there for me. I would say my Mom, Dad, Sister, and my boyfriend are all my biggest supporters.
Candie & Michelle: We are so glad you have that support system. Please describe your experience being on “So You Think You Can Dance”?
Amelia Lowe: Being on So You Think You Can Dance was a huge whirlwind and it takes a lot longer than you think it would. The time in between the initial audition, Vegas Week, and when the show begins taping live is about a six month process. Even though you're excited about what's going on, you can't tell anybody until the show airs in the summer time. I was still in high school at the time so I felt like I was living a secret double life. Working with all of the choreographers on the show was a dream come true despite all of the stress you're put under on a daily basis. I loved my experience on the show.
Candie & Michelle: How has life changed since your career has taken off?
Amelia Lowe: I wouldn't necessarily say that my career has "taken off". In the performing arts, you're only as successful as the work you're currently doing. I will say that being on So You Think You Can Dance has opened the door to a lot of great teaching opportunities that I wouldn't have otherwise. I have gotten to travel the country to teach for studios and conventions as well as to perform. I'm able to live on my own in New York City and do what I love to financially back that up. I could not be happier with where my life is right now.
Candie & Michelle: Are than any other dancers who influence your style of dance?
Amelia Lowe: I find that I'm inspired more by hip hop dancers and ballet dancers than by contemporary dancers like myself. My two biggest inspirations at the moment are Vinh Nguyen and Misty Copeland. I love Vinh's musicality and dynamics and I love Misty's strength and grace. I try to incorporate the best from the both of them into my dancing.
Candie & Michelle: We will have to check them out. :) If you could dance with anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?
Amelia Lowe: If I could dance with anyone past or present, I would dance with Gene Kelly. I've been lucky enough to meet his wife and learn about him through her. He seems like the perfect combination of elegance and easy-going every man. Plus he always made his partners look good.
Candie & Michelle: I completely agree with Gene Kelly. Is there any location you would like to dance at that you haven’t yet?
Amelia Lowe: I would love to dance in Paris. I've never gotten a chance to go to France and from everything I've seen of it, it looks like the most beautiful place in the world.
Candie & Michelle: France is definitely on my bucket list. What advice would you give to your younger self?
Amelia Lowe: I would tell my younger self not to worry about what others think about you. Stay true to yourself no matter what.
Candie & Michelle: That is great advice. :) What advice would you give to aspiring dancers?
Amelia Lowe: I would tell aspiring dancers to treat every opportunity to perform onstage as a learning experience. When you're young you can go to any competition you want and perform. When you get out into the real world, you have to fight for every chance to dance. So don't take any performance for granted.
Candie & Michelle: Also good advice. Are there any new dancers who have caught your attention?
Amelia Lowe: Tate Mcrae, Christina Ricucci, and Sophia Lucia are all new dancers who have caught my attention. They are each beautiful in their own way and I can't wait to see how their dancing matures as they get older.
Candie & Michelle: We will have to check them out as well. Tell us about your YouTube show “Grownup-ish”.
Amelia Lowe: I have a YouTube show called "Grownup-ish?" which is a comedic tutorial for young 20somethings trying to live on their own. In my show I find the balance between finding humor and actually teaching people how to cook, craft, or do makeup. It's a fun, easy-going show that makes tackling independence a little less daunting.
Candie & Michelle: I have watched it and love it. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your fans?
Amelia Lowe: I would like to thank my fans for sticking with my on my journey throughout So You Think You Can Dance, and to especially thank the ones that have stayed with me since I've left the show. It makes everything I do seem that much sweeter because you guys still care about me. Having that kind of support is not easy to come by.
Candie & Michelle: How can fans discover more about you and you work?
Amelia Lowe: My fans can follow me on Instagram at @ameliamaelowe or Twitter at @dance9amelia, and subscribe to my channel on YouTube @AmeliaLowe to discover more about what I'm up to and the work I'm doing.
Thank you so much Amelia for taking the time to sit down with us. We look forward to having you back again. :)
