I would like to introduce the fabulous Christy Sloat as our "Author of the Month" for the month of August. Here is the personal interview Candie and I were treated to. Thanks so much Christy. :)
Candie and Michelle: Have you always known you wanted to be a writer? Did anything happen to push you in that direction?
Christy Sloat: I always knew. What pushed me was quitting my awful dental job. I hated doing it. I wanted to write and create.
Candie and Michelle: Wow. I did not know you did dental work before this. So glad you decided to write so we could have the characters we love so much. So, How has life changed since your career has taken off?
Christy Sloat: It's busier but I want to be even more busy. I want to write full time like most authors.
Candie and Michelle: I understand. I really believe you can do that too.
Is it hard to juggle having a family and being a writer at the same time? How do you do it?
Christy Sloat: It's hard but I think I balance it out okay. My kids go to bed and my work begins. I promote during the day when I can and I write at night while they sleep.
Candie and Michelle: I can completely relate to that schedule with my son. How does living in New Jersey differ from living in California?
Christy Sloat: It's so different! I go back every couple of years. Its slower pace here in Jersey. Lots more farming and trees. Lots more family oriented things to do. Family is important to me. Cali is where my dad is and my brother. I miss them but Jersey is home now.
Candie and Michelle: I'm glad you get to visit your family in California. Wow! I did not know that about New Jersey. I hope to visit one day.
Who has been your biggest supporter in your career so far?
Christy Sloat: My mom. She reads all of my books and I can talk to her about future project's. I have support from friends but my mom is family support.
Candie and Michelle: A good support system is so important. I am so glad you have that. What was the hardest part in getting your writing career started?
Christy Sloat: Getting fans to read the books. Heck finding readers is hard. There are so many new authors on the scene. It's hard to stay above water.
Candie and Michelle: I can see why. Hopefully this website can help with that. For those who haven’t read your books yet how would you describe your writing style?
Christy Sloat: Hmm. Funny. Quirky. Scary. Sexy. I'm an honest writer and I write from the heart.
Candie and Michelle: Having read your books I say that sums it up quite nicely. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Christy Sloat: Editing. I hate it. Its so damn time consuming!
Candie and Michelle: I would agree it is my least favorite part as well. So thankful for my two friends who help me with mine. What is something you do to overcome writer’s block?
Christy Sloat: Wait. That's all you can do. Don't force it.
Candie and Michelle: Thank you for that tip. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Christy Sloat: That's hard. Probably Tara Brown. She has helped me so much and is always willing to answer questions for me. She's not a snob and she's honest.
Candie and Michelle: That is good you have her. I feel like you have been mine. If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
Christy Sloat:That's easy; Harry Potter. I love that book. What a phenomenon!
Candie and Michelle: I totally agree. Yes, it is! Out of all the series you have written so far which has been your favorite one to write?
Christy Sloat: The Visitors Series. It's been a fun ride. I enjoyed scaring fans with the true accounts of the house.
Candie and Michelle: Candie has already read that series and loved it! That makes me want to read it even more and I am. As a whole which character has been your favorite “good guy” to write about? Who has been your favorite villain?
Christy Sloat: Favorite good guy; Brylee favorite Villian; Evangeline Barclay
Candie and Michelle: Two great choices! Out of all your books do you feel like there is a particular character you relate to the most?
Christy Sloat: Avery. She's shy yet she grew so much. I have as well.
Candie and Michelle: I love Avery. I can see the relation. Is there anywhere that you have traveled to that has inspired you to use it one of your upcoming books?
Christy Sloat: Washington state. I wrote about it in The Unraveling of Avery Snow. She goes on a hike that I went on while I was there.
Candie and Michelle: I imagine it was beautiful there. I remember that scene in the book. What book are you reading now?
Christy Sloat: Hexed by Michelle Krys
Candie and Michelle: I will have to check her out. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Christy Sloat: K.D Ferguson & Elisa Dane
Candie and Michelle: I will add them to my list on Goodreads. What advice would you give to your younger self?
Christy Sloat : Go to college dummy!!!
Candie and Michelle: What advice do you give to other aspiring authors?
Christy Sloat: Find a good editor, cover artist and don't stop writing
Candie and Michelle: Really good advice. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Christy Sloat: Just, Thank You & don't give up on me!
Candie and Michelle: Oh don't worry Christy we won't. How can readers discover more about you and you work?
